Retention Killers
Mascara:
Wearing mascara on extensions is against Ooh La Lash policy for a reason. Mascara can be incredibly difficult to remove and can cause the glue bond to break down quicker.
Skincare:
Products containing oil should be avoided on and around the eye area. Oil breaks down the glue bond quickly and can cause the extensions to pop right off.
Salt Water + Tears:
Crying, the beach, and even pools are major retention killers. It is not expected that clients avoid these activities altogether, but a thorough cleanse after these types of activities will help prevent bad retention.
Improper After Care:
Improper aftercare is the #1 reason clients have bad retention. Cleansing the lashes daily ensures any dirt and oils are removed before doing any damage to the glue bond. Cleansing daily will also prevent infection along the lash line.
Picking:
Rolling the extensions in your fingertips while watching TV is considered picking and is just as bad as pulling at them. Leaving the lashing alone is a must. Picking can cause permanent damage and bald spots/ gapping along the lash line.
Steam:
Hot tubs, saunas, and very hot showers give off steam, which can also break down the glue bond. Breaking the glue bond will not hurt the natural lashes, but it will cause a longer and pricier fill appointment.
Medication and/or Pregnancy:
Certain medications and changes in hormone levels can cause the lash growth cycle to change rapidly. Lashes can grow much quicker or slower making it seem like poor retention when in reality the extensions are holding up great. The frequency in appointments will need to be adjusted to fit this new cycle.
Weather + Heat:
There is no way to control the weather, but drastic changes in temperature and humidity can cause poor retention. However, we can control the activities we attend, such as campfires, opening hot ovens, and anything else that involves heat. High heat can cause the tips of the extensions to burn and singe. This can result in a removal and full set.
Sleeping:
Certain sleeping positions that involve face to pillow is unfortunately a great way to pull lashes out. Although it can be comfortable, please try to avoid this to prevent any damage to the natural lashes. Pro tip, use a silk pillow case to added protection!
